John Horne
Manufacturing & Operations Director

Q: What are some of the biggest changes you’ve seen in the industry since you started, and how has SurfacePrep adapted?

Since starting as an apprentice in 1995, I’ve seen huge changes in the industry — especially around automation, digital integration, and tighter environmental and safety standards. SurfacePrep has adapted really well by investing in R&D, expanding our product range, and sharing best practices across the group. The acquisition of Hodge Clemco and other businesses has helped us combine long-standing expertise with new technologies, keeping us ahead of the curve.

Q: Having experienced both Hodge Clemco and SurfacePrep UK, what do you think sets SurfacePrep apart in the industry today?

SurfacePrep stands out because of its collaborative culture and global reach. Hodge Clemco was always strong on engineering and customer service, but SurfacePrep has taken that further by connecting specialists across regions and disciplines. That shared knowledge and innovation means we can offer tailored solutions with excellent technical support — it’s a powerful combination.

Q: Over your time in the business, is there a particular project or moment that stands out?

The acquisition of Hodge Clemco by SurfacePrep was a real milestone. Being part of the integration process and helping align teams, systems, and cultures was a big moment for me personally. Seeing the business grow through further acquisitions since then has been incredibly rewarding.

Q: What’s one piece of advice you consistently share with customers to help them get the best results?

Always understand your application properly and don’t cut corners on preparation. It’s often overlooked, but it’s critical to the success of any coating or finishing process. Getting it right first time saves time, money, and ensures long-term performance.

Q: How do you like to spend your time outside of work?

I spend most of my time outside work with my family - I’ve got two very active children. My son Jake is massively into karting, and my daughter Millie is the gymnast of the family, so there’s always something going on! I’ve also got a big circle of friends that blends into family life, which gives me the fun and social time I need to recharge before Monday rolls around. I’ve always believed we work to live, not live to work - and that balance is really important to me.

Q: What do customers say about you?

I’m often told I’m approachable, knowledgeable, and focused on finding solutions. Having worked my way up through the business, I understand the challenges customers face and always try to be honest, responsive, and helpful - whether it’s technical advice, service support, or helping improve efficiency.

Q: Reflecting on your journey from apprentice to director, what lessons or values have stayed with you throughout your career?

Hard work, curiosity, and integrity have always been key for me. I’ve learned from every role and every person along the way - from the shop floor to the boardroom. Staying grounded, being open to change, and keeping the customer front and centre are values I’ve carried throughout my career.
