David Douglas
Operations Manager (Hire)

Q: Since you started in the industry, what’s something that’s surprised you or challenged you the most and how has SurfacePrep helped you grow through that?

One of the biggest challenges that surprised me when I entered the industry, is the sheer number of customers across different sectors who require immediate, reactive support. This often includes responding to equipment breakdowns, supplying replacement hire units at short notice, providing additional plants to support customers’ operations, or sourcing specialist equipment they may not already have. SurfacePrep has played a key role in my growth by providing a strong, experienced team around me.

Q: Having worked at both Hogg blasting and now SurfacePrep UK, what differences have you noticed in the way things are done or the kind of support you get?

I have worked for Hogg Blasting since I was 19, starting as an apprentice, then becoming a field service engineer, moving into hire and service coordinator, then into my now role as Operations Management for Hire. The level of support I now receive has increased significantly. I have access to dedicated departments for all key functions, which has made a substantial difference. Prior to the takeover, the business was family-run and, while there was some support, it was nowhere near the level available now with SurfacePrep.

Q: Is there a particular project you’ve worked on that you’re especially proud of or learned a lot from?

Worked on many projects and they all give you different demands . These demands are remembered for future projects with either the same customers or new customers. They make you think of that possibility and how you will tackle this in that set scenario. I am proud of various projects we have contributed too that goes from refurbishment works of bridges too reservoir repair works.

Q: When working with customers, is there a tip or piece of advice you often share to help them get the best outcome from a design or solution?

Give as much information as possible so every eventuality is covered, and to ensure jobs run as smoothly without any delays. Delays cost money and sometimes reputation.

Q: What do you enjoy doing when you're not working—any hobbies or interests that help you unwind?

Taking the family out to different places & Attending Newcastle United matches although sometimes that doesn’t help me unwind depending on the result!

Q: What kind of feedback do you usually hear from customers or colleagues about your work or approach?

Reactive and supportive. Get a lot of new customers through recommendations. Do my best to support everyone from start to finish.

Q: How do you approach designing solutions for one-off or highly specialised customer needs?

We offer a comprehensive range of hire equipment that we believe is best suited to each project’s requirements. If a customer has a need for bespoke equipment, we will assess the project and, where appropriate, design and supply a custom solution that is fit for purpose and available to hire.
